The Deloitte Experience

This Summer, two second year Commerce students, Rene' Abela and Gabriel Mamo Drury, were chosen to participate in an internship scheme at Deloitte - the largest international professional services network, providing audit and assurance, tax, financial advisory, and enterprise risk management services in over 150 countries, which is also locally established in Mriehel.

Both Rene' and Gabriel acquired this position by emailing an application to their selected and preferred companies and upon acceptance, finally chose to spend their summer months working at Deloitte. There they were given basic training in all fundamental aspects of the company, with highlighted importance given to auditing: the sector of expertise they aspire to follow.

The two Aloysians were assigned daily projects that consisted of checking accounts for errors, where accuracy is paramount. These were a few of the simple tasks, yet the most important for the two hard-working interns. Other vital tasks that have also been trusted into the hands of our two peers, included accompanying other employees to client meetings, entrusting them to represent the company and to back up the other representative should it be required of them.

This work experience has also benefitted them by introducing them to successful and influential people in their career path, who may guide them, and offer advice when needed. Having successfully finished their summer internship on brilliant terms with the company, both students are already known by the staff, and are familiar with the place, should they wish to apply as interns once again this upcoming summer, including the possibility of a fulltime job in the near future.

When asked what values they learnt during the work experience, both students without hesitation, stated that they have learnt the true values of cooperation, and having to live up to one’s responsibilities.

They would also like to pass on a message of encouragement to all those interested, to try out internships, even minor jobs, related to the career of their choice, as one would formulate a real idea of their future, and also affirm some aspects which one might have been unsure of whilst studying at school. Who knows? It might open the doors to the discovery of a new talent, or passion. If you’re considering this option, you’re one step closer to your dreams, and being on the right track.
