Rock the South
For some, February meant Valentine's Day. For a few others, it meant the release of the much awaited Fifty Shades of Grey. But for those music lovers, particularly those of the local music scene, it meant the Battle of the North (to Rock The South).
The highly acclaimed Rock the South festival, held annually in the month of April, kicked off this year with a battle of the bands as a preliminary round. The 2 winners of the 5 competing bands will be joining the other 41 bands in the Rock the South festival, whose reputation and popularity has seen a drastic rise in the past few years. The 5 competing bands are Shouting at Echoes, Five from Zero, Pyramid Suns, FUBAR and Central Strip (the latter two both being products of St Aloysius College).
The battle's final takes place this weekend, with 2 remaining gigs both to be held at Rookies Bar in Bugibba. On Friday, our own Central Strip will rock Rookies alongside Pyramid Suns as both bands strive to reserve their spot at their objective; Rock the South. On Saturday, Five from Zero and Fubar will share the stage, on the same night that the winning bands will be announced. Bands have been and will be judged on originality, stage presence, song-writing and crowd response. However, the audience plays a part in determining the winners of this competition, since people can vote by purchasing any type of drink (not necessarily alcoholic) at the bar, and marking their favourite band on the provided vote sheet.
So, this weekend, head to Rookies Bar, Bugibba for a night of dazzling local upcoming talent, and play your part too by voting for your favourite band! Doors open at 22:00 (10pm) on both nights.
